In 2014, Brunswick South-West Primary School joined the Resource Smart Schools' Program. This government initiative encourages schools to lower their resource use and become environmentally sustainable. Within this program, we have gained accreditation for the core module and the energy module. In 2017 we are working towards completing the water module. In 2018 we will be starting the biodiversity/waste modules.
Sustainability education is part of the Victorian School Curriculum. At BSW PS, we teach sustainability through classroom programs, daily practice and special events.
We have year 5/6 Environment leaders who monitor, initiate and promote sustainable practice.
Our school grounds are a valuable teaching and learning resource. Our space includes native gardens, habitat gardens, and fruit and vegetable gardens. We have parent led gardening and maintenance groups. We have a garden educator who works with the year 3/4 students.
Parents support the sustainability program in many ways. Most students bring rubbish free lunches. This is one way that we have significantly lowered the waste generated at our school.
